]]>ROSELLE, NJ - Ramadan, one of the holiest months in Islam, begins today, marking a period of fasting, prayer, and reflection for millions of Muslims around the world. This month-long observance holds deep significance in Islamic tradition, commemorating the time when the Quran, the holy book of Islam, was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The Significance of Ramadan:
Ramadan is a time of spiritual renewal and devotion for Muslims worldwide. It is observed during the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, known as the Hijri calendar. The start of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the moon, and its duration spans 29 or 30 days, culminating in the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast.
Fasting:
Central to Ramadan observance is fasting, known as Sawm. Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset. This practice teaches self-discipline, empathy for those less fortunate, and strengthens spiritual connections with Allah (God). The pre-dawn meal, Suhoor, and the evening meal, Iftar, bookend each day of fasting, fostering a sense of community and gratitude among believers.
Prayer and Reflection:
In addition to fasting, Muslims engage in increased prayer and recitation of the Quran during Ramadan. The Taraweeh prayers, performed each night in congregations at mosques, allow believers to seek forgiveness, guidance, and blessings. It is also a time for charitable giving (Zakat) and acts of kindness, as Muslims strive to embody the principles of compassion and generosity emphasized during this sacred month.
