Dog Injured by Train in Westfield Needs Home

Lost German Shepherd in Westfield Credits: Animal Control Solutions

WESTFIELD, NJ — Animal Control Solutions is looking for the owner of a German Shepherd mix, or possibly a new home for him, after he was hit by a train in Westfield Sunday morning. The unaltered male is about 5 years old, according to Beth Comitas, vice president of Animal Control Solutions, which handles animal control in Westfield.

Although he needed to have one leg amputated, Comitas wrote to TAP into Westfield that the vet who treated him found no major internal injuries.

Animal Control Solutions got the call from a NJ Transit train operator at about 8:20 a.m. Sunday, she said.

“He was very concerned for the dog and was unsure of how badly it was injured,” Comitas said.

“Upon arrival, Officer Modaferri met with Westfield Police Officers on scene — Officers Penn, Jaramillo, Domanoski and Gill,” Comitas said. “The officers did an amazing job at containing the dog as it was in shock and still trying to evade capture. They were genuinely concerned for the dog’s well-being.”

The dog was transported to All Pets Vet Hospital, where Dr. Sam and Dr. Fede provided treatment free of charge, she said.

“We are very grateful for their efforts at helping this sweet dog,” Comitas wrote. “The Westfield police officers have also called to check on him to see how he is doing. This was a great team effort.”

She said the dog is very friendly, despite his injuries.

“We are hoping to locate an owner or a potential adopter if he is not claimed,” Comitas said. “Inquiries can be sent via email to Friends of Animal Control Solutions at Foacs@Yahoo.com.”
