The First Congregational Church of Westfield invites visitors of all ages to join them in a community-wide “mini-mission event” on Friday and Saturday, August 14-15. This intergenerational program will offer a chance to participate in the church’s outreach with Bridges of Summit, a highly regarded non-profit that provides food and supplies to the homeless in Newark and New York City.
On Friday, August 14, beginning at 4 pm, participants will meet for a Bible story and discussion over pizza dinner in the church at 125 Elmer Street in Westfield. Afterwards, the group will assemble over 300 bag lunches for distribution the next day. Interested participants are asked to call the church office in advance at 908-233-2494 and sign up to donate provisions for the lunches, including bread, sandwich meat, chips, fruit cups, granola bars, and water bottles. Donations are also gratefully accepted by those who wish to help but cannot participate in the event.
On Saturday, the group will meet in the church’s parking lot at 9 am to carpool to Edison Place in Newark, where they will work with the Bridges staff to hand out bagged lunches, soup, lemonade and other supplies to the homeless. The group will return to First Congregational Church by early afternoon.
“The Bridges ‘runs’ during the school year are some of our youth group’s most popular activities,” said Rev. Joy Mounts, Associate Minister. “We are looking forward to extending our partnership with them into the summer and we hope to introduce as many people as possible to this very important -- and very rewarding -- service.”
