Giving Tuesday Remembers the Hungry at the Holidays

Giving Tuesday Remembers the Hungry at the Holidays Credits: Community Food Bank of NJ

HILLSIDE, NJ – The Community FoodBank of New Jersey, which feeds thousands of hungry New Jerseyans every year, has launched a new campaign, with help from a generous donor, to promote Giving Tuesday, the national day of charitable giving, Nov, 29.

This anonymous donor has issued a $25,000 Giving Tuesday Matching Gift Challenge. On Nov. 29 only, every gift to the FoodBank will be doubled up to a total of $25,000. These donations will help the non-profit meet its budget requirement to continue its work and that of its partners to feed the state’s estimated 1.2 million hungry neighbors.

It is essential to raise the bulk of these funds during the holiday season when people are most inclined to give, said CFBNJ’s President and CEO Debra Vizzi, because hunger in New Jersey continues to be a growing problem. “When the food bank started, the working poor were not on the radar,” said Vizzi. “Now more than 50 percent are working poor. Too many families – including those with working parents – have to choose between medicine and food; housing and food; or utilities and food. On Giving Tuesday, we are imploring all those who are able to help their neighbors and donate to the FoodBank so no one has to miss a meal due to cost.”

Hunger doesn’t just affect the working poor, but every level of society, including a “staggering number of young people,” says Vizzi. “It touches every community. People know there are hungry people, but they don’t think it is in their community. It is in every county. I mean every county has hungry in their community. Hunger is not a body type. It is not a socio-economic class. It is not necessarily an issue just related to the poor.”

Continued Vizzi, “Hunger is not an overseas problem. It is a New Jersey problem. It is a U.S. problem.”

And it is a problem the Community FoodBank battles every day. With locations in Hillside and Egg Harbor and partnerships with other food banks throughout New Jersey, CFBNJ distributes food to churches, synagogues, and food pantries. Donations of money to CFBNJ help the food bank to provide five meals for the hungry citizens of New Jersey. The math works out to 10 meals for every dollar donated on Giving Tuesday.

All of this support helps the Community FoodBank increase the public’s awareness about hunger and transform it into action. When people donate, Vizzi wants them to know that they are putting food directly on the table of a needy family.

“Our job is to create Thanksgiving for the hungry every day,” said Vizzi.

Time was, New Jersey residents could at least count on their elected representatives to be good stewards of their funds they paid in taxes:  to maintain their roads, their obligations, and their air and water.  Those times are long gone.  For close to three decades, administrations of all political stripes have hedged here, and borrowed there, and put the state on a depressing ...
