ROSELLE, NJ - (Update) What was first reported as a downed power line, turned into an evacuation late Wednesday afternoon from the area at Chestnut Street and West 10th Avenue in Roselle. Three families were evacuated for safety reasons and chose to stay with family and friends.

According to police at the scene the power line that fell hit a gas cover on the ground that had an unknown gas leak. Later Wednesday evening Mayor Dansereau was at the scene and said that it was a fluke the line happened to fall and hit at the right spot of the unknown gas leak which shot flames when the wire hit the ground.

“Had this line not fallen we may have had a bigger issue at another time,” said the Mayor.

Workers from PSE&G and Elizabethtown Gas are still on the scene and officials expect repairs to run into tomorrow morning.
