ROSELLE, NJ - Humberto Canter, a father of four, from Roselle won relief from deportation on Wednesday and will be released from ICE custody to be reunited with his family after five months in jail.

Cantero was facing deportation after he was stopped for driving without a license in February in Monmouth County, and transferred into ICE custody through the county's 287(g) program, which deputizes the Sheriff's office to perform certain immigration functions. Cantero has been separated from his four children and wife since February 23, 2017.  On Wednesday he faced his final immigration hearing to determine whether he would be able to stay in the United States.

On the eve of the final immigration hearing, Make the Road NJ along with Cantero ’s wife and children, and many others held a vigil at the Elizabeth Detention Center calling for his release. Roselle Mayor Christine Dansereau stood in alliance with the family and offered her words support.

“It’s very sad that we are still coming here on a constant basis of trying in support of trying to stop what I feel is a barbaric process in what is supposed to be a free county,” said Dansereau.

You can see the rest on the Mayors comments along with Cantero’s wife and children’s comments in the video below.
