ROSELLE, NJ - As is the case in many communities, the current pandemic has forced many Roselle residents to spend more time at home this spring and summer. Residents in the borough’s Fifth Ward, in particular, have used much of this time working on their lawns. At their suggestion, Fifth Ward Councilman John Fortuna has announced Roselle’s Fifth Ward “Whose Grass is Greener?” Lawn Contest.
“Once the weather improved this spring,” Fortuna said, “we noticed many of Roselle’s homeowners had been very productive during their free time. We see more immaculately groomed lawns than ever before, more flower beds where there used to be none. This is especially true in the Fifth Ward.”
“The residents in the ward suggested this contest to celebrate something positive during a rough time and to have some fun in a year where we desperately need some. It’s a friendly competition among neighbors.”
In addition to lawns, there will also be a separate contest for flower beds.
Homeowners can enter the contest by emailing or texting Fortuna at either firstname.lastname@example.org or (732) 956-6391. There is no entry fee.
Judging will take place during the week of September 13. Mike Bush, owner of Bush Landscaping in Cranford, will lead the panel of judges. Fortuna says there will be prizes awarded to the winners, which have yet to be determined.
“We’re still in the process of trying to secure sponsorship,” Fortuna said. “But when residents put in the effort to make their properties as attractive as possible, all of Roselle wins.”
