QUEENS, NY - A 33-year-old Roselle man was arrested and charged in connection with a crash on the Grand Central Parkway yesterday that killed two passengers who were in the car with him, NYPD police today.
Andrew Shakespeare, of Roselle, was driving with four passengers in his SUV at about 6:30 a.m. yesterday when his vehicle caused a chain reaction with three other cars on the parkway, authorities said.
Akeam Grant, a 16-year-old Brooklyn resident, was ejected from Shakespeare’s vehicle and died at the scene. Another passenger, 33-year-old Layon Campbell, also from Brooklyn, would later die at a hospital, police said.
Shakespeare’s 2014 BMW X5 SUV was traveling westbound on the parkway at a "high rate of speed" Sunday morning when he made a lane change and sideswiped a 59-year-old woman’s car, authorities said.
Shakespeare then lost control of his SUV and crossed three lanes. His car hit another vehicle, causing both to strike the center guardrail, cross into the eastbound lanes of the parkway and roll over, police said.
A 38-year-old woman who was driving eastbound on the parkway swerved, but was struck by Shakespeare's vehicle, police said. She lost control of her car which went up the right shoulder embankment, struck two trees and rolled over, police said.
Shakespeare was transported to Long Island Jewish Hospital for a minor head injury. He refused all sobriety tests and was charged with DWI, reckless driving and two counts each of manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter and aggravated vehicular homicide, police said. He was also charged with three counts of reckless endangerment.
The two other passengers in Shakespeare’s car, a 16-year-old and 21-year-old, were transported to a hospital, where they were listed in stable condition police said.
Five people in the other three vehicles were transported to New York hospitals, where they were also listed in stable condition.
