NEWARK, NJ - Newark police and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are investigating a shooting that took place on Sunday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. that took the life of Alexander Owens, age 29, of Roselle.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor, Newark police officers were dispatched to the intersection of 14th Avenue and Bergen Street on reports of a person down. Arriving officers discovered Owens suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Owens was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:37 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.
The incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. The investigation is active and ongoing, according to Fennelly.
