ROSELLE PARK, NJ - The 2017 Re-organization meeting in Roselle Park went from a celebration of new leaders being sworn in to getting down to business.

After Mayor Hokanson finished his his opening remarks, the council went straight to work. First up was the nomination for Council President. What was listed in the meeting agenda as Councilman Joe Petrosky to be named as the new Council President was quickly changed when Councilwoman-At-Large Charlene Storey made a motion to change the nomination to Councilman Thos Shipley. It was quickly seconded by Councilman Eugene Meola and after a vote of 4-2, Shipley was named as the Council President. for 2017. This would not be the only time Petrosky would be voted against during the meeting. As the list of each chair and committee was read, Petrosky and the Mayor were were pulled from the lists and the 4-2 vote continued on until the end of the meeting.

Councilwoman Storey who is a registered Democrat, was publicly removed from the Democratic Committee in Aug. of last year, by the Roselle Park Democratic Committee (RPDC) Dan Petrosky, the brother of Councilman Joe Petrosky.

The largest surprise of the meeting was 1st. Ward Councilman Eugene Meola also known to be registered as a Democrat, had voted through the whole meeting with the Republican team. It was found out later that Meola had actually switched parties from Democrat to the Independent Party.

While the Union County Board Of Elections has not received Meola’s filing, we were able to obtain a copy his declaration form.

Below are the highlights from the meeting.
