UNION, NJ – Four-year-old David Benitez of Roselle had a plan for navigating his first Easter Egg Hunt. “I’m going to run really fast and get all the eggs!”

He was one of hundreds of Union County children with a similar idea that they put into practice as they swarmed over the fields in Warinanco Park, April 15, for the Second Annual Community Egg Hunt, hosted by Moving New Jersey Forward, which was created by Union County Freeholder Sergio Granados.

“With such an amazing turnout last year we have expanded to have over 2,500 filled eggs, Granados said.

Children, 12 years old and younger, were divided into age categories of 4 and under, 5-8yrs old, 9-12yrs old. There was also a section for special needs children that had no age restriction.

“As the mother of a child with special needs and an active community member to achieve better opportunities for children with special needs, I am very proud to see that inclusion is real in our county,” commented Iliana Chevres, program coordinator for the Elizabeth Parent Support Group. “As an advocate for the rights of children with special needs, I have had the opportunity to visit different places in New Jersey, and I am proud to say that Union County is one of the few that offers many opportunities and services to children with special needs. This activity is a great example of that. As parents of children with special needs, we are proud of having access and equality in this event that is important for our children.”

The event concluded with free live music, food, arts & crafts and games for the entire family. The Easter Bunny and Batman also made an appearance to wish all a Happy Easter

Co-sponsors of the event are Prevention Links, New Birth Grand Lodge of NJ and the Union County Parks and Recreation Dept.
