UNION, NJ – U.S. Senator Cory Booker came to the steps of Town Hall in Union on Monday to endorse Union County Sheriff Joseph Cryan for State Senate in the 20th Legislative District.

“This is somebody who is not just a sometimes public servant, but is living his life with that understanding of what it means to be an American,” said Booker of Cryan.  Speaking of Cryan’s Irish culture, Booker said, “There’s nobody that I know that doesn’t know their heritage, know their roots, know their responsibilities and their obligations more than the man I came here to honor today.”

Booker said Cryan has the kind of “steady, steadfast, continuous leadership that this state really needs, in good times and bad, someone who’s there for everybody.”

“I know everybody here knows the kind of guy that we’ve got.  And now he’s going to ascend to a position of great importance in our state.  We have a lot of work to do.  New Jersey has taken some blows during the recession and we’re still fighting to come out of it.  We need people who can not only do the work but know how to bring people together, know how to unite people no matter their party, no matter their background.”

“I am proud to stand here with someone that represents everything America needs,” said Booker.  “I want to endorse Joe Cryan for the State Senate.”

“Cory, like you are in the arena in Washington, I want to be in the arena in Trenton because I want to make a difference to the people in the 20th District,” said Cryan.
“We need our voice to be heard,” said Cryan.  “Whether making sure those heroes in uniform get legislation signed that protects their health because they run into places when everyone else is running out and they deserve the safety and protections that government should afford them.  Or whether it’s making sure that the great people with the trades have work, that the state of New Jersey continues in a partnership.”

“I care about the people in the 20th District.  They will be my focus.  Together we carry a collective voice for fairness in education, for making sure that our property tax reform is fair for all of us here, for making sure that economic jobs are for all of us here.  All of the things that matter to us, matter to us collectively because we bring the foundation of what we are and the passion of our principals.  Together we can continue to make a difference and I hope to make one in Trenton.  I make a difference because of the things I believe in and the people I had the joy of spending my life with.”

“Today we begin our work.  We have work to do to be a collective voice to make a change to stand up.  I’m running for the passion of our beliefs and the principals of the foundation of what we believe in and I’m running for the people of the 20th District and I intend to be a voice for everyone.”

Among those attending the endorsement were Assemblywoman Annette Quijano, Assemblymen Raj Makherji and Craig Coughlin, Union County Freeholders Bruce Bergen, Mohamed Jalloh, B.J. Kowalski, and Vernell Wright and Mayors Derek Armstead, Angela Garretson and Township of Union Committee members Manuel Figueiredo, Clifton People, Jr., Joseph Florio and Michele Delisfort.  Members of the NJFMA, NJ State PBA, LIUNA, and Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters were also present.

“I’m so proud to know Joe’s going to be back in Trenton with me,” said Assemblyman and Union County Democratic Chairman Jerry Green, “because I can’t find a smarter politician in New Jersey than Joe Cryan.”

Politics IS Government in Union County

April 22, 2018

After Bruce Paterson of Garwood was stopped from speaking at the Union County freeholder meeting of March 22 regarding the politics behind refusing to give the party line to a sitting freeholder I thought this brazen suppression of free speech could not go unanswered. The April 19 meeting I answered with these comments.

After ten years of following government in Union County I conclude that ...

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
