FANWOOD, NJ -- Since being recognized for having the "Best Soup in NJ" by foodie website The Daily Meal, sales the Fanwood Grille's various soup offerings have jumped.

"We've had people drive down from Bergen County just to try our soups," said Paul Watterson, who gets into Fanwood Grille as early as 4:30 a.m. to start making soup. "People call to ask directions and come in and get multiple pints of all the different varieties. Never did we imagine how popular our soups would become so quickly."

Watterson has gone from making one new variety per day to multiple soups, just to keep customers wondering what's next and to keep up with demand. This week's new offerings have included broccoli cheddar, Italian sausage soup, and sweet potato pie soup. In some cases, he uses an old family recipe (Grandma's Spanish Chicken Soup) and other times he experiments until he is satisfied with the final product (Falafel Vegetabel Soup).

"We like to give people samples of the soups so that they will try something the might not get without first having a taste," Watterson adds. "For instance, our falafel vegetable soup is a gluten-free, vegan soup that some customers feared might be too spicy. But once they try it, they love it."

Fanwood Grille Soup Varieties:

Butternut Squash  Butternut Squash (vegan)
Chicken Noodle Pea Soup
Corn Chowder Pasta Fagioli
Cream of Chicken Spanish Chicken Soup
Creamy Tomato Lentil Soup
Hearty Beef & Vegetable Italian Hot Dog Soup
Maine Lobster Bisque Italian Sausage Soup
Mexican Chicken Tortilla Falafel Vegetable Soup
New England Clam Chowder Thanksgiving (Turkey) Soup
New Orleans Chicken Gumbo Sweet Potato Pie Soup

"Our chicken noodle soup and New England clam chowder have become so popular that we'll sell the whole batch before the end of the day," Watterson explained. "Then I have to make more to keep our case stocked for people who want to come in and get pints or quarts of soup to go."
