ROSELLE PARK, NJ - Union County held its 20th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Union on Saturday.

The festivities began with a mass at Saint Patrick’s in Elizabeth. The parade began at 1 PM in Union.

This year's grand marshal was Frank McGovern of Cranford, who has been involved with the Union County St. Patrick's Day Parade for 17 years. Mc Govern was the general chairman of the parade in 2005.

A special “Thank you to the Sponsors Parade” continued afterward and went on into the evening.  Members of the Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee boarded two busses and were escorted by Elizabeth Police to many of the sponsor’s places of business.

In Roselle Park the stops were at Sun Tavern on Westfield Ave. and then on to Dowling’s Pub and Restaurant on Chestnut Street.  Marc Dowling and Russ Olden, the owners, and patrons were already celebrating with a packed house while awaiting the arrival of the group. The caravan arrived with a police motorcade of motorcycles and several patrol cars.

The parade committee also brought along their drummers, bag pipers and a lot of good ole Irish Cheer!

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
