ROSELLE PARK, NJ - What do you get when you have a local dentist who happens to have an indoor basketball court behind his office, a business chamber with a mission to feed kids, and a Mayor and Council in full support?

The answer is, a lot of children that will not go hungry!

That was the goal this weekend when Dr. Jamie Oshidar of Roselle Park Dental opened his basketball court along with members of the Roselle Park Business Chamber, Mayor Hokanson, and Council.

Residents came out to support the event by “Shooting Hoops for Food” to raise money for the Community Food Bank of NJ.

Taking turns shooting against the clock, and each other, was the goal. Each person got one minute to get as many baskets as possible. There was a small fee to participate and everyone received a free shirt.

Prizes were awarded for two categories, Free Throw and 3 Point Shot. It was friend against friend and even father against son as they competed in timed shootouts. In the end, there was one true winner, 15-year-old Jermaine Jackson who beat out everyone and won both competitions. He received two $250.00 checks donated to the food bank in his name and some other great prizes that included two custom mouth guards, two $50.00 cards to spend at Dunkin Donuts and time at the basketball court with his friends, along with other prizes that were donated by area business.

Local food establishments from the town also donated food for the event. A total of $1,455 was raised that will be used to provide backpacks of food on the weekends for kids in Roselle Park and their families so no-one is going hungry. The group says, that they will do this event again and hope to make it even bigger next time!

(Update Dec. 5) As of Monday evening, the Roselle Park Business chamber has collected over $3,000. Donations are still being collected through the end of the December by contacting the chamber at "I would like to recognize and thank some of our major donors like Meridia, National Life Group and of course the Food vendors, Duncan Donuts, Joe’s Rotisserie and Costa's who made all the food possible,” said Chamber President Julio Louis.” We couldn’t have done it without all you, and now we will be helping a lot of children.”

Video highlights of the event can be viewed below.
