ROSELLE, NJ - One of the best Battle of the Badges to date was played this past Saturday afternoon as Roselle Police busted onto the scene and took the coveted trophy away from Roselle Fire by a score of 20-6, in the annual Battalion Chief Johnny Lynn Softball Game.
The event now in its 4th year is a tribute to Battalion Chief John Lynn a longtime firefighter and a member of Roselle FMBA Local 255, who was laid to rest on May 23, 2014.
The Lynn family was at the game and the first pitch of the game was by Anna Mae, Lynn’s wife, who was also presented with the game ball. Lynn’s daughter Deanne playing for the firefighter's team and brother John Jr. a Roselle Police Officer played for the other side.
With the largest amount ever of spectators coming out to show support, both departments hit the field giving it their all in the hopes of not just winning the trophy, but most importantly, bragging rights!
From the very beginning, the police brought their A game by showing up early and taking the home team (firemen’s), dug out which happened to be on the shady side of the field.
When asked what their strategy was this year to win? They replied as a group, “we got here first, to throw them off.” They also said they planned to, “hit the ball, that's it!”
That is just what they police team did, with hit after hit and run after run. While the fireman tried their best to defend their title, in the end, it was Roselle PD who took control and the win.
Highlights of the game are below.
