WESTFIELD, NJ — Looking for a way to give back to local law enforcement? The “little free library” in front of 710 East Broad St. is a 24-hour drop point for handmade cards that will be delivered to the Union County Sheriff’s office this week. Drop your cards in the box on the lower shelf of the book exchange before 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The dollhouse-size library is part of the Little Free Library movement, which encourages people to build free book exchanges worldwide. To learn more about it, click here.

Owner Sara Liptack is a member of a Facebook group called Good Deeds by the Heart by Women whose members have recently been on a mission to thank local law enforcement. Bee Korkmaz McGee, who organized last week’s lunch to thank Westfield police, is also a member.

“After talking to another member at Friday's appreciation luncheon for the WPD, she thought it would be a good idea to use the LFL,” Liptack said. “I couldn't agree more.”

Stefanie Hilarczyk, owner of Westfield Kids' MusicRound, said she founded the Facebook group about six months ago after doing some Christmastime volunteer work.

“I really got to thinking about how cool it would be if we did things all throughout the year,” Hilarczyk said.“I reached out to family and friends creating this group and it just has been like wildfire.”

After hearing about the police shootings in Dallas, Hilarczyk said she put up a post in the group about thanking local law enforcement.

“It just snowballed again,” she said. “We are group of over 200 women. We've covered over 10 police departments in just a week all across New Jersey.”

Hilarczyk hopes that more people will join the group.

“The need to give back is so important to me. I'm a mom of a special needs child with trisomy 18, ADHD and a muscular disorder. I've watched and felt the love a community and family can give,” she said. “I think my group Good Deeds by the Heart by Women is going to be huge one day. My dream would be to create a foundation and chapters all over New Jersey, empowering women to create goodness all over. I truly believe in this crazy world we all just need a little bit of empathy and kindness.”

Prayers the Devil Answers by Sharyn McCrumb (Altria, 2015)

Years later, after the tragedy, someone remembered the Dumb Supper and what had happened there. That was the cause of it, they said, because the ritual wasn't a game after all. It really was magic, but magic has rules, and she broke them. Even when they call it a 'senseless tragedy,' people always try to find a ...
