Beth's Book Review

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)   How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating. Johnny Got His Gun was a punch in the gut of those of us who had lost friends and family in the jungles of Viet Nam and we couldn't fathom why such a ...

Dad in the Box

I teenaged my way through high school under the assumption that my parents had no idea what I was doing.  I like to think I was pretty good at withholding information and presenting situations in ways that were other than they really were.   Still, sometimes they found things out.  Like the time my friends plopped me on our front door step at one o'clock in the morning and rang the doorbell.     Fortunately, my buddy with the car was a designated driver.      I don’t ...

Family Fun

I’ve been celebrating Halloween with my kids for over a decade now, and as a result, I’ve got a few Halloween hacks for parents to share. 1. Go to the pumpkin patch early. Some might take this advice a step further and skip heading out to the over-crowded pumpkin-slash-apple-slash-pony-ride-slash-corn-maze extravaganza entirely, but not me. Those fall pumpkin photos with the kids are just too amazing to miss. But go early. Most farms are pretty empty the first few weekends in October, but not so much as ...

Health News You Can Use

Researchers aiming to identify lifestyle factors related to weight management followed more than 4,500 young adults (average age 24) for ten years. At the end of the study period, 77% of the men and 72% of the women had gained weight. The lifestyle factors associated with no weight gain among the remaining 23% of the men and 28% of women were regular eating patterns (not skipping meals) and no history of dieting. The results of this study were published in the April 2018 issue of the journal Eating Behaviors. Article: ...

Hometown Heroes

There are people in the community that contribute on a regular basis. You may have noticed them as they are at almost every event. They quietly “blend in” and are always the first ones to roll up their sleeves and jump in to do what needs done. TAPinto Roselle/Roselle Park is looking beyond the group, beyond the event and looking at these un-sung “Home Town Heroes” and spotlighting them as a way to say “Thank You” for your dedication to the community. This edition we are spotlighting Walter Wimbush, a ...

Know Your Nest

Over the next five years, home prices are expected to appreciate, on average, by 3.6% per year and to grow by 18.2% cumulatively, according to Pulsenomics’ most recent Home Price Expectation Survey. Team Nest Builder wants you to understand what that means for homeowners and their equity positions. As an example, let’s assume a young couple purchased and closed on a $250,000 home this January. If we only look at the projected increase in the price of that home, how much equity will they earn over the next 5 years? Since ...

TAP in to Your Inner Foodie

A recent question posted by TAP Editor Roselle/Roselle Park – Kathy Lloyd began the debate of Taylor Ham or Pork Roll?  This article is dedicated to the primarily New Jersey delicacy. So you ask, “What is the difference between Taylor Ham and Taylor Pork Roll”?                        Think of it as Coke is to Cola, Taylor Ham is to Pork Roll. The name debate seems to be between North Jersey locals calling ...

The Hyperlocal Consultant

Facebook recently announced it will be changing its feed and algorithms so that news from publishers and posts from businesses will be relegated in favor of posts about your neighbor’s cat.  Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that Facebook is making these changes because he is concerned about his legacy and that of the company he founded. If Mark Zuckerberg is truly worried about his legacy and that of Facebook, casting legitimate news publishers and businesses into the abyss will only further tarnish ...
