ROSELLE, NJ - It was a “Trick” that turned into a “Treat” for a lot of young mothers when the Roselle Active Seniors took a prank to the next level.
“It all started as a Halloween trick,” says Roselle Active Seniors Club President, Pam Rey.
“We were at our Halloween party when Esther Eggleston, received a pregnancy test as a “trick” gift,” says Rey. “We all had a good laugh and thought it was over."
The plot thickens!
According to Rey, Esther took the joke to a new level, and over the next few months every time the group got together for any events, Esther would refuse to help stating, that she could not help “in her condition”. There were even jokes eluding to whom the father could be and jokingly and decided it had to be Brandon Bernier the towns “youngest” councilman and who frequents many of the senior's events.
The group then decided to take it even further by saying if Esther was going to be “pregnant” there would have to be a baby shower. That turned into the groups' next project, a baby shower for Esther!
The group decided they could donate the presents to the mom’s and babies at Raphael’s Life House in Elizabeth, a mother-child program, created to help homeless, and pregnant young women, secure a brighter and more stable future for themselves and their newborn babies. During their stay, mothers receive job-seeking assistance, parenting skills training, and learn the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle for themselves and their children.
The seniors reached out to the community asking for donations for their Baby Shower. People from all over donated. NJ State Senator Joseph Cryan stopped in at the event last Friday at the Amalfe Community Center with a few gifts for the group as well as they enjoy all of the games and food.
At the end of the shower, it took the help of the Roselle Fire Department to load all on the many gifts and transport them to Raphael’s Life House in Elizabeth.
