NEWARK, NJ - Roselle Mayor Christine Dansereau, Roselle Park Mayor Carl Hokanson, Linden Mayor Derek Armstead, and Clark Mayor Sal Bonaccorso were on the list of nominations for the Gateway Regional Chamber of Commerce “Mayor of the Year” Awards, held on Thursday evening at the Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel.

This was the twenty-ninth annual event for the chamber that included networking, followed by a five-minute segment by Union County mayors.  Most of the Mayors or their representatives talked about their town and their successes within their community in the last year.

To make it as little more fun, each speaker was timed and "gonged" rather loudly, if they tried to go over their time limit. If they were gonged, they were not eligible to win the coveted “Best Speaker of the Night” award.

This year was kind of calm with most speakers just talking about their towns. However, some got creative such as Union and Kenilworth by doing a little poetry. In years past, there has been rapping, costumes and all kinds of competitions to win the award for best speaker.

After dinner the awards were given in the following categories:

  • Mayor of the Year - Derek Armstead Linden
  • Business Administrator of the Year- Jill Goode - Mountainside's CFO
  • Best Speaker of the Night - Dahlia Vertreese - Mayor of Hillside

Below are the comments from Roselle Councilwoman Cynthia Johnson who was nominated for Best Speaker, while speaking for Mayor Dansereau, and Roselle Park Mayor Carl Hokanson.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.

The German Girl

The German Girl by Armando Lucas Correa (Washington Square Press, 2016)
