ROSELLE PARK, N.J.— Members of the Board of Education announced their exploration of security protocols at Tuesday’s board meeting.
“Student safety is definitely something we want to address,” said Superintendent of Schools Pedro Garrido. “This board is committed to the safety and security of our students here in Roselle Park.”
He added that there is an ad hoc committee working with police and taking recommendations from the State Department of Education. Among those are stronger visitor policies and examinations of each building, as they are all different.
“We have a lot of things in place; we are doing a lot,” said Garrido. “We want to make sure we do more and enhance what we already have.”
Board Member Troy Gerten talked about updating school buildings; they are looking to speak with vendors regarding doors and windows for greater safety.
Saul Qersdyn, a resident of Roselle Park, addressed the members of the board during the public portion to ask whether teachers being armed, as suggested by President Trump, was something being considered.
“No,” said Board of Education President Loren Harms. “No, no, no!”
Garrido will be attending Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) meetings in the next four weeks—dates will be posted on the borough’s website. "I am looking forward to meeting parents," he said.
Board Member Matthew Leingang spoke about conversations held during recent PTA meetings regarding guest speakers in schools for childhood assault prevention and bullying. “Students have the right to feel safe, strong and free,” said Leingang.
PARCC testing was also a topic of discussion at the meeting; the testing period will be held during the months of April and May.
“We are looking forward to a successful PARCC testing,” said Garrido. “There are so many great things going on in the classrooms.”
The board meeting for March 20 has been moved to March 27 at 7 p.m.
