ROSELLE, NJ - Rounding out to the end of Black History month, the Mayor and Council read proclamations of some very important figures in the country and locally. 

Proclamations were read by the Mayor and Council for the following individuals:

  • Former First Lady Michelle Obama
  • Ella Baker
  • Myrtle Counts
  • Lewis Latimer
  • Ethelyne Grimsley
  • Larry Doby
  • The NJ Misaada Relief Squad & TMX Intermodal, LLC for their work in collecting clothes and taking them to Spring Lake, N.C. after a hurricane. 

The cadets of the Roselle Jr. Police Academy was presented with Certificates of Recognition for completing their course. (More on this will be coming up in a separate story.)

A special presentation of “Ain’t I a Woman” was performed by Avrielle Smith a 3rd-grade student at Dr.Charles C. Polk School. The presentation can be viewed below. 

In other business, Councilman Fortuna stated in his report that a plan is in place to start pothole repairs and road paving as soon as the weather breaks. He also noted that almost half of the roads to be paved will be done by the utility companies because of ongoing projects, so those roads will not be at the cost of the borough. 

A new and better Borough Website should be released possibly in the next week. Councilman Bernier stated that if any residents have any ideas on anything they would like to see on the new website, to reach out to him at 732- 943-6498 with your ideas. 

Councilwoman Wilkerson talked about her trip to Atlantic City where she and Recreation Director Donald Shaw received some valuable information to bring back to the community.  Specifically, Wilkerson talked about better ways to serve those with disabilities to be more inclusive.

Councilwoman Johnson spoke about the recent complaints of people speeding in school crossing areas. Johnson stated that she has been working with the Police Chief and speed traps were set up to crack down on this problem. She noted that many citations were issued this past week and they are working on other more permanent solutions to this problem.
