RAHWAY, NJ - Roselle Mayor Christine Dansereau and Roselle Park’s Mayor Carl Hokanson will join other mayors from Union County municipalities in signing the 'Mayors Against Illegal Guns Statement of Principles'. The mayors will officially commit to the Statement of Principles and make brief remarks on April 11, from 7 - 9 p.m., at Hamilton Stage, Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway.

The Statement of Principles reads:

"Whereas: 30,000 Americans across the country are killed every year as a result of gun violence – including 12,000 who are murdered – destroying families and communities in big cities and small towns; and

Whereas: As Mayors, we are duty-bound to do everything in our power to protect our residents, especially our children, from harm, and there is no greater threat to public safety than the threat of illegal guns;

Now, therefore, we resolve to work together to and innovative new ways to advance the following principles:

PUNISH – to the maximum extent of the law – criminals who possess, use, and traffic in illegal guns.

TARGET and hold accountable irresponsible gun dealers who break the law by knowingly selling guns to straw purchasers.

EXTEND background check requirements to all gun sales, including the private sales that take place between strangers online and at gun shows

OPPOSE all federal efforts to restrict cities’ right to access, use, and share trace data that is so essential to effective enforcement, or to interfere with the ability of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to combat illegal gun trafficking.

WORK to develop and use technologies that aid in the detection and tracing of illegal guns.

SUPPORT all local, state, and federal legislation that targets illegal guns; coordinate legislative, enforcement, and litigation strategies; and share information and best practices.

INVITE other cities to join us in this national effort."

The Mayors Against Gun Violence platform is part of a integrated anti-gun violence initiative driven by ‘Everytown for Gun Safety' a nonprofit organization founded in 2014 by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. According to its website, 'Everytown for Gun Safety' is "a movement of Americans working together to end gun violence and build safer communities. Gun violence touches every town in America. For too long, change has been thwarted by the Washington gun lobby and by leaders who refuse to take common-sense steps that will save lives."

“The shock and awe comes every time there is a mass shooting for a limited time and people lobby ferociously to see a significant change and cry out for gun law reforms. As voices for the people, mayors, and all other representatives need to keep the pressure on to change gun control laws which are weak and demand that laws be created that do all that can be done to limit the loss of human life, said Dansereau. “Roselle has experienced first hand the loss of life due to the ease in which illegal guns can be acquired. What one doesn't discuss enough are the lives which have been changed irrevocably of those who remain living after their loved ones have been killed. It's a domino effect of loss and pain that continues beyond the initial loss of life. Let us not take another breath without demanding gun law reforms that are real and deal with the protection of human life.  For this and more I am here in solidarity with my mayoral colleagues and members of the Roselle community.”

“I support the efforts to increase public safety as well as ensure that guns are kept out of the hands of criminals,” said Hokanson. “Laws need to be created which prevent individuals from getting their hands on military-style weapons and illegal guns. I stand with all of the mayors in solidarity, we must work together to keep all of our communities safe.”

Dansereau and Hokanson will be joined at the event by the following mayors:

Suzette Cavadas, Union
Shelley Brindle, Westfield

Colleen Mahr, Fanwood
Richard Huber, Springfield

Derek Armstead, Linden
Nora Radest, Summit

Tom Hannen, Cranford

After Bruce Paterson of Garwood was stopped from speaking at the Union County freeholder meeting of March 22 regarding the politics behind refusing to give the party line to a sitting freeholder I thought this brazen suppression of free speech could not go unanswered. Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
