ROSELLE, NJ – Roselle’s First Presbyterian Church is known for being the first church in the world to be “lighted” when the thirty bulb  “electrolier” was installed to the delight of parishioners.

Mayor Christine Dansereau signed a recent proclamation at the church, located at 111 W 5th Ave., and presented it at its recent 150th annual celebration.

“I was just completely moved to be part of this glorious moment for the church,” Dansereau said. “While I was visiting, it really hit me. Roselle was the first ‘village’ to be light in the entire world, and the catalyst for the light we take for granted today. Isn’t that just miraculous, and just really hard to grasp?”

In 1949, the church was devastated by a fire but the “electrolier” was saved, restored and kept safe through all the years.

“I want to thank generations of church leaders for taking care, and saving, this artifact over the years,” the mayor said. “I think this is a moment the Roselle community should all remember and celebrate the fact that Roselle was the first lighted community everywhere,” Dansereau added. is Roselle’s official electronic news source!
