SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ – Excitement was in the air on Thursday evening as Scotch Plains-Fanwood honored its senior basketball players and cheerleaders just prior to the start of the Raiders’ showdown vs. Roselle.
Seniors Justin Guy (1), Charlie Levine (5), Justin Fletcher (15) and Dean Johnston (30) started the game alongside junior guard Harden Widder. (Injured Eric Berkins did not play.) The starters performed well and built an 11-6 lead by the end of the 1st quarter.
Roselle got its offense into gear during the 2nd quarter and outscored Scotch Plains-Fanwood, 17-16, during the frame. Still, the Raiders went into the locker room with a 27-23 lead.
Sharpshooter Matt Drubulis hit five three-pointers, including three in the 3rd quarter, for 15 points to lead all Raider scorers. Hayden Widder and Justin Fletcher each added 8 points for Scotch Plains-Fanwood.
Cameron Johnson led Roselle with 18 points and three rebounds, while Quamir Martin chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds for the visitors.
Roselle tightened its defense and held Scotch Plains-Fanwood to just three points in the 4th quarter to secure the victory. The Raiders, who were stuck on 43 points for much of the last quarter, had several chances to tie the game in the final minute. Unfortunately for the home crowd, none of their shots, including a three-pointer that would have sent the contest to overtime, made it into the basket.
