SPOTSWOOD, NJ - The Spotswood High School girls varsity tennis team came close to winning their first round NJSIAA matchup with Roselle Park High School on Wednesday, but went down 3-2. Axelle Lemiere and the second doubles team of Angelina Moschella and Melody Dzergoski earned the two match points for the Charges. Lemiere defeated Zarai Beas in her third singles match, (7-5, 6-2), while Moschella and Dzergoski defeated Isabel Paiva and Harleen Randhawa, (6-4, 6-3). The first-round loss knocks the Chargers out of the tournament and drops the team's overall record to 3-8.

Gabriela Zeron lost her first singles match to Marina Rivera, (6-2, 6-2), and Karen Mausser dropped her second singles match to Brylene Persons, (6-4, 6-3). Chloe Donelan and Lindsey Michaels lost their first doubles match to Rachel Leone and Harshdeep Randhawa, (6-3, 6-3).

Eleventh seeded Roselle Park moves on in the tournament to face third seeded Shore High School. who had a first round bye. Spotswood was the sixth seed in the tournament. The Chargers return to regular season action on Monday when the team hosts Perth Amboy High School. Spotswood defeated Perth Amboy earlier this season 4-1. Matches begin at 4 p.m. on the Spotswood High School tennis courts on Summerhill Road.
