UNION COUNTY, NJ — The county will begin vaccinating healthcare workers Thursday, officials said.

Health care personnel eligible under the state’s guidelines to receive the vaccine must make their appointments through the county’s registration webpage starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, officials said in a press release.

“As more supplies become available, we will announce locations and procedures in accordance with New Jersey Department of Health regulations and guidance,” said County Commissioner Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “We hold the health and safety of those we vaccinate in the utmost regard, and we are ensuring that all protocols are in place as we proceed.”

Mirabella asked that residents continue to practice social distancing, get tested for coronavirus and wear face coverings.

“We have all been depending on each other to stay safe during this pandemic, and each one of us has the power to make a difference in our community,” he said.

County officials said the vaccines are being rolled in a timeline governed by the state’s guidelines.

Those guidelines indicate that the first phase of the vaccine rollout, which began in New Jersey Dec. 15, prioritizes healthcare workers and then residents of long-term care facilities.

Union County is offering the Moderna vaccine, officials said. The vaccines are delivered in two doses.

In a Dec. 28 factsheet about the rollout of the vaccine, state Health Department officials said about 650,000 people across New Jersey are eligible for Phase 1A of the vaccine rollout and that it was not known when the next phase of the rollout would start.

“It may be weeks before New Jersey moves to Phase 1B,” the officials said.
