ELIZABETH, NJ - The “Lime” Electric Scooters officially hit the streets of Elizabeth on Friday afternoon, launching a new form of transportation to get around the city. If you are driving around the city you will see these green machines on a lot of corners or in highly visible areas.

A how-to-ride e-scooter demo and safety training course called “First Ride Academy” was set up at the Union County College, Kellogg Building, on W. Jersey Street on Friday morning and led into the launch at noon.

These scooter safety training sessions will be available on future dates for anyone wanting to learn more about how to safely operate the scooters.

Below is a video of some who came out to give a first look at these scooters.

Lime scooters are $1 to unlock and $0.20/min to ride. The scooters are GPS-enabled, making it simple for riders to find, unlock and pick up a nearby scooter using their smartphone. When the ride is finished, riders simply end the ride with their respective mobile apps and responsibly park by the street curb.

Editors note a correction from our prior story. There is no bike rack as these are free-standing units.

According to Lime, the scooters will be lined up at certain hot spots/high traffic points during the day so that they can be used during appropriate commuting times. Because the scooters are dock-free, there are no designated racks, but Lime will usually line scooters up in those areas. It was also noted the scooters will be placed at Kean University.

According to Lime Community Relations Consultant Paul Mondeserie, Lime will be responsible for the retrieval of the scooters. Independent consultants known as juicers will pick the scooters up at night when they need to be charged. The scooters will be available from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Mondeserie also noted that businesses can participate by becoming "Lime Groves" which means they will pull the scooters in at night will be paid to charging them and put them back outside for use.

The easiest way to find a scooter is to look up your location on the Lime app to find a scooter closest to you. You can download the Lime app in your respective mobile app stores. You can learn more about Lime by clicking here.
