ROXBURY, NJ - Roxbury High School sports’ "No. 1 fan," Eddie McCarthy, turned 75 last week, a milestone celebrated June 16 with a surprise birthday party at the Knights of Columbus hall in Netcong.
Family, friends, coaches and players joined at the party to shower McCarthy with affection and thanks for being a die-hard Gaels fan.
McCarthy is a Roxbury alumnus and has been attending Roxbury sporting events for more than 50 years. He never missed a football game, baseball game or wrestling match. McCarthy often is so devoted to Roxbury teams, he often rides with them on the bus to away games.
Over the years, McCarthy has collected hundreds of pieces of Roxbury spirit wear. He is known for his loyalty to Roxbury; wearing the apparel to all the sporting events he attends. His family said that McCarthy has so much Roxbury clothing they must rotate it each season because he has nowhere to store it all.
At the party, McCarthy was presented with a blanket made from T-shirts as a memoir of his favorite Roxbury sports. The blanket includes T-shirts of past and present spirit wear. Many Roxbury coaches and families dug into the archives to pull out some of the most memorable shirts.
The blanket is a representation of McCarthy's level of devotion to the Roxbury community. In addition to the blanket, McCarthy was given gift cards to many of his favorite places.
McCarthy enjoyed the party and expressed thanks to all the friends and family who came and for all the gifts he received.
