ROXBURY, NJ – It was a bad night for Roxbury’s basketball teams as both the boys and girls squads were crushed by their rival neighbors from Randolph.
Playing at home, the girls fell 39-24 while their male counterparts, on Randolph’s court, lost 58-40.
The girls fell behind quickly, entering the second period with a 6-point deficit. They showed strength in the next two frames scoring eight points to Randolph’s 10 in Period 2 and tying the Rams in the third period. But Randolph pulled out the stops in the final, scoring 14 points while the Gaels managed only seven.
Meanwhile in Randolph, the boys were slammed in all periods but the fourth and the bloodletting began right from the start as the Rams scored 15 in Period 1 while the Gaels managed only three. It didn’t get much better for Roxbury in the second frame: Randolph put 12 more on the board while Roxbury got six.
The Gaels tightened up significantly in the third and fourth periods, actually outscoring Randolph 17-16 in the third but falling one point in the final period, scoring 14 points to the Rams’ 15.
The rough night put the girls team record at 3-7 and the boys at 3-6. The boys play next, with an away game against Jefferson on Thursday. The girls are scheduled to take on Hackettstown at 7 p.m. Friday, weather permitting.
