ROXBURY, NJ – Monday was a good day for the Roxbury High School baseball team as it beat Morris Knolls 4-3. It wasn’t so great for the boys lacrosse squad, which lost a tight one to Mendham.
In that 8-7 defeat, the lacrosse players rallied hard in the last quarter, which they entered down by four points. They’d scored two goals in the second period and one in the third, but in the final quarter the Gaels managed to garner four points.
They came up one short, as Mendham also scored a goal, a disappointing outcome that followed the team’s rough 16-4 loss on Saturday to Delbarton in the Morris County Tournament.
Their baseball counterparts, meanwhile, enjoyed the flip-side of sports. Riding some solid pitching by starter Nick Danna for four innings, with Donovan Brady closing, the Gaels also saw their bats do some damage.
After reaching second on a third inning double off the wall, Mike Roumes was sent home via a hit by Andy Axelson and a sac fly by Will Findlay.
Going into the sixth down 2-1, Roxbury got things going with a single by Ryan Ditrolio. Roumes followed with another single. Then Axelson took to the plate and blasted a 3-run homer over the center field fence.
It proved to be a game-winning hit as neither team scored in the seventh.
