ROXBURY, NJ – 90-degree weather didn’t stop people from running in this year’s Roxbury Community 5K on June 12, but maybe the Roxbury High School senior prom did.

About 600 people participated in the annual event, sweating their way through 3.1 miles of Succasunna roads, said race organizer Jim Schulz. There were about 20 more participants in last year's race, he said.

The prom was on a Friday that year, and Schulz assumed some Roxbury seniors would have participated in this year’s race had they not been donning formal wear instead of running wear.

Despite the lighter turnout, the event went off seamlessly. It went particularly well for 31-year-old Succasunna resident Justin Scheid. He took first place overall with a 5:05-per-minute pace that had him cross the finish line in 15 minutes and 46 seconds. That was more than two minutes ahead of the next runner.

Another Succasunna resident, 15-year-old Dylan Gaslorowski came in 3rd, flying past the timing clock as it showed 18:10. Succasunna 12-year-old Gabriella Daskalova was the second female across the line. She ran the race in 20:53.

Schulz said the race raises about $7,000 per year. Proceeds go to Roxbury High School Project Graduation, the Roxbury Day Care Center, the Roxbury Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, the Roxbury Kiwanis Scholarship Fund and Roxbury Social Services.

Necessary Discussion and Debate of Addressing School Violence

June 10, 2018

Dear Editor,

As of late, due to most disturbing acts of violence against children in our schools, there is much vigorous debate regarding gun control and protection of our children and grand-children.

Much of the debate is based on emotion rather than reasoned thought.

I think that exploration in three areas needs to be more thoroughly discussed and debated. The first is ...
