ROXBURY - What better way to welcome the first weekend of summer than with a spring cleanup of the garage, basement or attic?

Summer arrives Thursday, June 21 and the Sixth Annual Town-Wide Garage Sale, a fundraiser for The  Roxbury Area Chamber of Commerce, will take place June 23 and June 24.

On those days, bargain hunters will roam the township with cash in hand hoping to find stuff they always wanted, never knew they wanted or don't really want but "what the heck, it's only $5." Given that there were more than 150 individual garage sales taking place at last year's event, chances are good that both sellers and buyers will find some level of satisfaction.

People hoping to sell unwanted items in the driveways and yards are normally are required to get permits from the township. That's not the case on June 23 and June 24.

"The township’s Mayor and Council have once again agreed to waive the required yard-sale permit and fee for the weekend in an effort to help the Chamber attract as many shoppers and encourage as many garage sales within the township as possible," noted the Chamber of Commerce.

The best way for sellers to take advantage of the event is to register their sale via the Chamber’s dedicated website—roxburygaragesale.org—where additional information about the event can be found. "An interactive sellers-map as well as indexed sale listings for download will be published on the garage sale website on Friday, June 22," advised the Chamber.

That's right, just like TAPinto Roxbury, the Sixth Annual Town-Wide Garage Sale is paperless. There will an online directory - one you can view right on your smartphone - instead of paper maps showing participating sellers. The deadline to register is the first day of summer (see above).

There will also be no signs provided by the Chamber. That's what dollar stores are for.

There is no obligation to sign up or pay anything. "The Chamber’s goal is to attract as many shoppers and encourage as many garage sales throughout the township as possible during the weekend of June 23 & 24," says the Chamber. "It’s that simple."

However, the event IS a fundraiser: Money donated by participants (through the garage sale website) helps the non-profit Chamber provide scholarships to Roxbury students.

The town-wide sale is not to be confused with the Chamber's Community Yard and Craft Sale at Horseshoe Lake scheduled for Sept. 22. "Live in a condo, an apartment, away on vacation? No problem," said the Chamber. That's what the September event is for. Event details for that one will be released in late July.
