MOUNT OLIVE, NJ – A Roxbury man last weekend nearly sideswiped a police car parked on the shoulder of Route 46 before being pulled over and charged with driving while intoxicated and other offenses, police said.
The man, Eric Rochelle, 44, of Landing, came close to hitting Mount Olive Police Sgt. Dave Turner, who was parked on the shoulder of westbound Route 46 near Route 80, police said. Rochelle was driving a white pickup truck when the 1 a.m. Sunday incident took place, they noted.
“The pickup truck almost struck the parked police car as it passed and the police vehicle shook,” said a police statement. It said Turner pursued Rochelle onto International Drive South and Rochelle pulled into the parking lot of the Extended Stay America Hotel.
State troopers arrived at the scene because they were looking for a vehicle, matching the description of the truck being driven by Rochelle, reported to have been operated erratically on Route 80, police said.
In addition to DWI, Rochelle was charged with reckless driving and failure to maintain a lane, police said.
