ROXBURY, NJ- -The nation’s first U.S. U18 girls fistball team, a group of North Jersey girls bound for the world championships in Germany this month, is looking for donations to help smooth the path to Germany.

The team has set up a Generosity fundraising page, hoping to gather $2,500 in donations for the upcoming trip. All costs to send the girls to the tournament are self-funded, and each family of the players is spending $2,200, said U.S. Fistball Association President Bob Feid.

Those costs include flights, hotels, uniforms and meals, Feid said. “Therefore, we are appealing to all who can and are willing to assist with helping us by providing additional funds to help offset some of our expenses,” team captain Christine Connelly wrote on the page.

The host of the tournament in Nuremberg, Germany, is providing transportation to and from the local airport, hotel and the playing fields as well as discounted prices on the hotel and meals, and a tour of the city, Feid said.

Fistball is similar to volleyball, but the grass outdoor court is larger and one bounce is allowed in between each of the three hits per side before the ball must be struck over the net.

Many of the athletes first heard of fistball in the past year, but the team has been practicing three days a week for the last few months to prepare. Now the players are just weeks away from representing the U.S. on an international stage.

“The idea that we’re a part of the U.S. team and that we’re making history by being the first youth team going over there, it’s just so exciting, and beyond words,” Roxbury’s Alexx Berdej said in an earlier TAP into Roxbury story. “It’s just awesome.”

The international competition takes place July 20 through July 24. The U.S. team might meet up with squads from Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Germany, India, Kenya and Switzerland.
