ROXBURY, NJ – Attention Walmart shoppers in Roxbury: Your local store has less than a month to go.

Walmart Corp. plans to close its Ledgewood store before May 10 and begin its demolition “as soon as June,” said company spokesman Phillip Keene on Wednesday.

The store is being razed to make way for a new Walmart “Supercenter” at the site, part of the conversion of the former Ledgewood Mall into the new Shops at Ledgewood Commons.

Keene said the pharmacy in the current store is expected to close April 26. “All active prescriptions will be transferred to the Flanders store … unless other wise directed,” he said. That store, in the International Trade Center, is about three miles away from the Ledgewood store, he noted.

Open by Election Day?

Walmart hopes to open the new Supercenter in autumn of 2020, Keene said. The new store will be about 170,000 square feet, about 50,000 square feet larger than the current “Hometown” style Walmart, he said.

Keene said the company is “still finalizing details,” but currently plans to offer in the new store a full fresh food and dry grocery department, an “electronics of the future” section, a garden center with a patio and a “front-end transformation.”

An auto center, something available at the Mount Olive store, is not being planned. However, the store will likely be the first Walmart in New Jersey to have “online grocery pickup (OGP)” lanes where people can order groceries from home and have them brought out to their cars when they arrive.

Workers Can Keep Their Careers

“We’re excited to invest in the Ledgewood community,” Keene said. “The new store will allow us to serve our loyal customers in new and better ways. We can’t wait for them to see what we have planned.”

He said the company plans to do all it can to accommodate the staff of the current store.

“As part of the next several months of activity at the site, we have a plan in place to temporarily transfer any current Ledgewood associate who would like to continue their career with the company to another surrounding store,” Keene said. “There are about 140 associates at the Ledgewood location and seven stores within a 20-mile radius of Ledgewood.”
