Roxbury, NJ (July 25, 2016)--Today newcomers Lisa Millus, Meredith Soranno and Peter Okun submitted their petitions for their run for Roxbury Board of Education. Their base platform of Accountability, Commitment and Transparency (ACT) was also announced today. Three seats currently occupied by Richard Alexander, Carol Schenek and former Board President, Theresa D'Agostino are up for grabs in November's election.
"Their decision to run came after witnessing the many short-comings of the current Board including the teacher's contract and transportation department debacles, high administrative turn-over and most importantly increased budgets despite declining enrollment," stated Laurel Whitney, the slate's campaign manager. "To make matters worse, even the Board members have said that "finances were a mess" under the supervision of Carol Schenek as Chair of the Finance Committee."
Lisa Millus is founder and facilitator of Keep Learning Fun Tutoring and Educational Services as well as the creator of Roxbury's community-based Special Education Parent Advisory Group (SEPAG) and the Roxbury Cares About Schools Facebook page which has been a very active forum for disseminating information and calling parents to action about school and Board issues. Millus earned a Master's degree in Education and is a mom of three and has lived in Roxbury for 12 years.
Since 2004, Meredith Soranno has been a special education teacher at Copeland Middle School in Rockaway and has previously worked in River Vale and Paterson school districts. Soranno holds degrees in both Special Education and Elementary Education. Soranno, mother of two and Roxbury resident since 2000, is a long-time human rights advocate has volunteered her time on several projects locally and worldwide.
Peter Okun is Director of Marketing for New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program (NJMEP). He has 20 years of marketing experience, including senior leadership roles with national and globally recognized education and travel brands, such as Lincoln Educational Services and Liberty Travel. He has also served on an educational advisory board. Okun received his degree in International Business with a specialty in Marketing. Okun has resided in Roxbury for 13 years and has two children.
The trio feels confident that after the slam to the taxpayers and other damage done by this Board, that the voters will reach for change away from the incumbents or anyone associated with the CARE slate the incumbents run under.
