ROXBURY, NJ - Nixon Elementary School in Landing has brought back the JAM.

“JAM stands for JUST A MINUTE because here at Nixon we believe it only takes one minute to make a difference to be the best that you can be,” explained the Nixon Culture and Climate JAM Committee (CCC). Two years ago, the school ran Nixon’s JAM and it was a huge success. It is now back and is bigger and better than ever.

Students and staff, led by the CCC, came together on May 5 to sing and dance to their theme song appropriately named, “It Only Takes a Minute.”

For this year's JAM, Nixon is partnering with students and staff from Roxbury High School’s Mini-THON Committee to raise money for the Hershey Children's Hospital to support cancer treatments for children.

Junior Sarah Waldron, RHS Mini-THON president, along with four other committee members, came to Nixon School to talk about the recent Mini-THON event at the high school, Penn State’s THON and Hershey Children’s Hospital.

Nixon Principal Danielle Lynch asked her students, “How can we come together to support Four Diamonds and the children at Hershey Hospital?”

Third Grade Teacher Julia Happe explained that “The Nixon School community next week is asked to bring in donations to go to help the kids and the Nixon CCC committee will get together the following week to count the donations. We are planning to announce to the student body how much we raised to help the kids at Hershey on May 18th.”

This year, the school community was also involved in a live performance by the Nixon JAM Band made up of Nixon staff and a high school junior. All students were unified in attire and dance moves. The students at Nixon, alongside their teachers, practiced for the day where they can JAM together.

“This is a special day because it represents the collaboration to unify all members of our school community as one," said the CCC. "This date, in particular, is very special for our Nixon family because it represents the accomplishment of completing SCREEN FREE WEEK and is inspirational as students prepare for the upcoming PARCC and NJ ASK assessments.”

The class that brings in the most donations will receive For the Kids (FTK) sling bags. The Nixon CCC kids received FTK sunglasses and each Nixon student present on Friday went home with an FTK silicone bracelet to remind them why they were raising funds.

Necessary Discussion and Debate of Addressing School Violence

June 10, 2018

Dear Editor,

As of late, due to most disturbing acts of violence against children in our schools, there is much vigorous debate regarding gun control and protection of our children and grand-children.

Much of the debate is based on emotion rather than reasoned thought.

I think that exploration in three areas needs to be more thoroughly discussed and debated. The first is ...
