ROXBURY, NJ – Registered voters who want to participate in this year’s primary election must get their "vote by mail" (VBM) ballots in the mail by the end of tomorrow (July 7) or put them into one of five official “ballot drop boxes” scattered throughout Morris County or come to Roxbury Town Hall before 8 p.m. to cast provisional ballots.

The official ballot drop boxes are situated in Morristown, Mount Olive, Rockaway Township, Montville and Madison. The closest to Roxbury is the one at the Mount Olive Municipal Building at 204 Flanders/Drakestown Road in Budd Lake.

They boxes look like regular U.S. Postal Service boxes, but they are colored red, white and blue and say “Morris County – Official Ballot Drop Box.” The drop boxes will be closed at 8 p.m. July 7.

There are no primary races for either Roxbury Township Council or Roxbury School Board. The only contested primary on the county level is between Cary Amaro and Charles Baranski, two Democrats vying for nomination to a seat on the Morris County Freeholder Board.

Roxbury ballots contain primary contests for U.S. Senate for both Republicans and Democrats. Five members of the GOP are vying for nomination and incumbent U.S. Sen. Cory Booker faces a Democratic primary challenge from Montclair resident Lawrence Hamm.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders remains on the Democratic primary ballot as a challenger to former Vice President Joseph Biden for nomination to run in November against President Donald Trump, a Republican.

The unusual nature of this year’s primary election is related to concerns about opening polling sites during the ongoing COVID-19 situation. Primaries usually occur in June, but doing that would have created “hardships and health risks for voters, poll workers and candidates alike,” said Gov. Phil Murphy in an executive order.
