ROXBURY, NJ – The township and The Canal Society of New Jersey on Sunday unveiled a small, but historically important, new park in the heart of Roxbury.
The new Riggs Canal Park, on Main Street in Ledgewood, preserves a 5.8-acre piece of the former Morris Canal that once housed a mansion built by Silas Riggs and a lock on the canal. It features a wide, shady walking path that takes visitors near the remains of the lock.
The officials hope the new park will not only become a place for people to take short, but relaxing walks through the woods, but also a destination for school history class field trips, said Canal Society of New Jersey Vice President Tim Roth.
“If I was a school teacher … I would combine that with Plane Two East at Morris Canal Park,” he said. “You’d have to take a bus (because Route 10 separates the two sites). Between The Riggs property, the Kings Store and Morris Canal Park/Plane Two East, you got a really good story there, right in Ledgewood.”
Little remains of the former canal lock at the site, just a few big rocks.
The park includes several interpretive kiosks. Click here to see one.
