ROXBURY, NJ – When Roxbury High School freshman Adam Reingold heard that his classmate’s house burned down, he knew he had to do something to help.

So the 15-year-old Succasunna resident became the organizer of an outdoor concert that will raise money for that classmate, Madison Maresca, and for her family. The Marescas lost their Landing home in a fire  on May 16.

“The night of the fire, Madison called me after it was put out and she was like, `Hey Adam. I wanted to talk to you.’" Reingold said. She told him about the fire. “So I called one of my friends and we got this concert going.”

Performing at the June 23 event, taking place at 6 p.m. at the Horseshoe Lake Park pavilion, will be several Roxbury High School musicians including Bryan Gonzalez, a 15-year-old singer, and Jake Wood, a 15-year-old pianist, Reingold said. He said another student, who dances, is considering a hip-hop demonstration.

“My friends are all into music,” Reingold said. “I’m just into the technological part behind it.”

Reingold said the students will be performing covers of popular songs. “They perform together in small family-run events, like family parties,” he said. “This is first time they’re doing it for the town.”

Although he got the ball rolling for the Maresca Family Benefit Concert, Reingold said the event subsequently came under the auspices of the Roxbury High School Key Club, of which he is a member.

Admission will be $10 with all money going to the displaced family, Reingold said. He said he’d like to see at least 300 people show up.

The reception among Roxbury High School students has been great, according to Reingold. He said many students have been donating the change they receive after buying their lunches. Just doing that has raised about $600 for the Marescas, Reingold said.

He said the family, though still displaced and living at the homes of friends and relatives, is doing OK. Madison is “hanging in,” Reingold commented. “They are getting through it day by day, trying to stay positive and happy.”

Necessary Discussion and Debate of Addressing School Violence

June 10, 2018

Dear Editor,

As of late, due to most disturbing acts of violence against children in our schools, there is much vigorous debate regarding gun control and protection of our children and grand-children.

Much of the debate is based on emotion rather than reasoned thought.

I think that exploration in three areas needs to be more thoroughly discussed and debated. The first is ...
