ROXBURY, NJ – The Towne Toyota car dealership in Ledgewood will be expanded and made “more aesthetically pleasing” under a proposal approved Monday by Roxbury officials.
The most visible change to the Route 46 dealership will be a new, white, red and silver façade on the building. It’s an upgrade required by Toyota to bring Towne Toyota in compliance with other Toyota stores.
However, dealership owners Susan, Jonathan and Cynthia Brauer of Morristown also plan to renovate the building to include two new service lanes, a new access drive, a new addition to the customer service area and redesign of the sales floor and service areas.
“The improvement sought will be more aesthetically pleasing and create more use of the building,” said Towne in its application for zoning board approval. Susan Brauer said she hopes construction can begin in July.
The company in June won board approval for a related project: The repurposing of the former Jack Trebour Motorcycles store for use as a new Towne Toyota Service Center.
The work approved by the board Monday also includes some improvements to a car storage lot on the east side of Arlington Avenue, across from the dealership. Much of the discussion at the meeting focused on Towne’s plans to improve security at the lot by installing wooden fencing, a locked gate and new lighting.
The board heard from several nearby residents who said the existing lights from the Towne complex shine into their windows. Towne said it will install LED lights that can be dimmed, shut some of them off at night and work with the town and its neighbors to make the lighting as unobtrusive as possible.
Brauer said all the projects should be finished in about a year.
