ROXBURY, NJ – The Roxbury High School baseball team on Monday advanced in state tournament play by narrowly defeating Ramapo at home.
The 10-9 victory in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament means the Gaels will next take on either West Essex or Old Tappan.
It was a back-and-forth contest that had Roxbury jump in front first in the second inning only to have Ramapo put five runs on the scoreboard in the next inning to tie the game.
But after two innings of no runs for either side, the sixth inning saw the Gaels fight back with a 5-run rally in which Andy Axelson, Will Findlay and Dan Hankowski had back-to-back hits. Roxbury entered the final inning up 10-5, but there was no easy coast to the finish line for the Gaels as Roxbury errors helped Ramapo fight back with four runs, not enough to win but plenty to keep the Gaels from relaxing.
Starting pitching was handled by Nick Danna. Donovan Brady finished to get the win.
The Gaels are now 16-8.
