ROXBURY, NJ – The Roxbury High School girls and boys lacrosse teams launched into their new seasons in the right way on Wednesday as both scored opening day victories.
The boys squad crushed Pequannock 15-4.
However, the girls had a tougher day, ultimately defeating Morris Catholic 7-6. During the game, Emma Karnitsky scored three goals, Emily Koepfler banged in two. Hannah Bhend and Mia Sadowski rounded out the scoring with a goal each. Goaltender Natalie Shulkowski made 12 saves.
The boys’ trouncing of Pequannock saw Dave Biank land four goals and Eric D’Arminio score three. Matt Dancsecs and Ryan Fehsal made two each while Anthony Perhacks, Zach Poissant and Paul Shadel each scored one. Gaels goaltender Wayne Safreed made six saves and goalie Branden Maresca made three.
The boys scored three goals in the first quarter, while Pequannock almost kept things even by landing two. But the Gaels pulled way ahead in the second, scoring five and holding their opponents to zero. Pequannock was able to score only two more goals in the next two periods while Roxbury added seven to the tally.
The boys take to the field again on Friday with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Kennelon.
The girls also play that day in an away game against Holy Angels.
