ROXBURY, NJ - The Roxbury High School boys basketball team stumbled in its first outing but bounced back Monday in its second game of the season by beating Mountain Lakes.
It was hardly a trouncing, as the Gaels won by a mere single point, defeating the Lakers 48 to 47. But a win is a win and it brought the Gaels' record to 1-1.
Senior Franki Hrelja led the scoring for Roxbury, with 14 points, a tally that included three 3-pointers. On his heels was Brian Nichols and his 13-point performance.
Mountain Lakes led the game 11-8 going into the second period, but the Gaels turned up the heat and scored 14 points in the next frame, to the Lakers'
11 points. The tightness of the game continued in the third period as Mountain Lakes chalked up 10 points to the Gaels' 9, and in the final frame when Roxbury scored seven while its opponent managed only six.
The victory was welcomed, given the Gaels' disappointing season opener in which they lost to Jefferson 53-39 on Dec. 15. Next up is West Morris on Wednesday.
