CHATHAM, NJ – Despite hitting six 3-pointers in the first half and leading 30-28 at halftime, the Roxbury High School boys basketball team lost to Chatham tonight 56-46.
The loss brings Roxbury’s record to 3-5 and allowed Chatham to maintain its undefeated record.
Gaels Brandon Lessig and Steve Loreng each hit two 3-pointers in the first half for Roxbury, but the team hit just one the rest of the way.
Lessig’s 3-pointer in the first period staked Roxbury to an 8-0 lead. Grant Dixon led Roxbury with 10 points and his late-in-the-game basket cut the deficit to 50-46, with 1:46 left.
Chatham scored the final six points of the game, all from the foul line.
“We just wanted to come in and compete as hard as we could,” said first-year Roxbury coach Joe Ansaldi. “We go through hot and cold spells and we hit a cold spell at the worst possible time for us. That’s why we play defense and try to help us through those cold spots.”
Ansaldi gave credit where credit was due. “Chatham is a great team and I have a lot of respect for Coach (Todd) Ervin, he does a great job with them,” he said. “We got better tonight. Our goal is to get better every day, and if we do that we should be pretty happy with the results.”
