ROXBURY, NJ - The Roxbury boys lacrosse team took its first loss today against Sparta in a 16-7 trouncing.

Sparta hit fast and often and racked up four goals in the first three minutes of the game, not allowing the Gaels a possession for the first five minutes. It was not until halfway through the first quarter that Roxbury managed to put one on the scoreboard.

The Gaels seemed to be coming back at that point, and they did get within two goals by the end of the first quarter, which ended 5-3 in favor of Sparta. And Roxbury managed to hold Sparta to only two goals in the second quarter.

However, the Gaels did not score at all in that frame, ending the half 7-4.

Third quarter scoring by Roxbury was again non existent while Sparta put up three more goals. The fourth quarter found the Gaels defense dazed and confused leaving attackers open to score freely for six more goals.

Sparta's defense made Roxbury work very hard for every goal, only allowing the Gaels three more before the game ended.

Game Stats: Matt Danscecs, two Goals; Paul Shadel, two goals; Grant Dixon, one goal and two assists; Dave Biank, one goal; Zach Poissant, one goal. Goalie Wayne Safreed made 16 saves.

The Gaels next play Thursday, 4 p.m., at home against Randolph.
