SPARTA, NJ - The Roxbury High School field hockey team opened its 2017 season on Thursday with a victory, beating Sparta 3-1.

During the game, played at home, the Gaels demonstrated great teamwork. The unselfish play led to many opportunities for various team members to contribute and too many for Sparta's defense to handle.

Roxbury's three goals were made by Emma Karnitsky, Jessica Michaels and Emily Stanich, who also scored an assist.  Roxbury made 14 shots on goal while Sparta managed only three.

The team plays again on Saturday, taking on West Morris Central at home at 4:30 p.m.
