ROXBURY, NJ – The Roxbury High School field hockey team played solidly and enjoyed a decisive win Tuesday in its first state championship playoff game.

The Gaels, playing at home, shut out Wayne Valley 4-0. The game was an NJSIAA first-round tournament for Section 1, Group 3.

Although Wayne Valley goaltender Nicole Mottole made 16 saves, it wasn’t enough to stop the Gaels’ offense as junior Kayla Bedel-Franklin scored two goals while sophomore Emma Karnitsky and junior Kathleen Scerra scored one each.

The win means Roxbury’s next state tournament battle, Round 2, will be against top-seeded Warren Hills on Nov. 2.
