ROXBURY, NJ — The Roxbury High School football team came out on top Friday night in an overtime win against Parsippany Hills, its first victory of the season.

Playing at home for the first time this year, and doing so on “Junior Gaels Night,” Roxbury gained momentum with a rushing attack that was greatly improved over its prior two outings. The result was a 10-7 victory.

Tyler Doerr led the way on the ground with key additions from Lucas Spitzer and Anthony Tye. Nick Mastandrea snuck it in from the 2-yard line to give Roxbury a 7-0 lead in the first half.

Things got dramatic when Parsippany Hills was able to tie it up given a short field on a Roxbury turnover in the second. But Jacob Fichter locked it down defensively in the secondary, breaking up multiple passes.

Then, Charlie Lisa recovered a fumble in the secondary hustling all the way from the line of scrimmage to cover the ball and Doerr recovered another fumble later in the game.

The Gaels, now 1-2, next take on Morris Hills in a 1 p.m. away game on Sept. 28.

Friday was also a good day for the field hockey team, which evened out its season record, at 4-4, by beating Pope John 4-0. The volleyball team wasn’t so fortunate; it lost to West Morris, a defeat that brought the team’s record to 7-2.
